MAHUIKA - The Maori Goddess of Fire. by StonedSmeagol MAHUIKA - The Maori Goddess of Fire. by StonedSmeagol
Mahuika is a Māori fire deity. Generally, Mahuika is female. In some versions, she is the younger sister of Hine-nui-te-pō, goddess of death. It was from her that Māui (in some versions he is her grandson) obtained the secret of making fire. She married Auahi-Turoa and together they had five children, named for the five fingers on the human hand, called collectively Ngā Mānawa. The symbolism of this connection between fingers and fire is revealed in the stories where Māui obtains fire from Mahuika by tricking her into giving him her fingernails, one by one.
In some versions, Mahuika is stunningly beautiful, and in others she is an old woman. The more interesting versions though describe her as beautiful when she’s happy, and a hag when she’s angry.
Anywhoooo.....Hope you like her, as much as I did drawing her. Enjoy folks:onfire:
A3 paper.
Black fine tip pen & black copic marker(C-10) for the dark background only.

This is incredable bro. Love the way it all flows and how you kept to tradition by haveing the flames leaving her through her fingers, most portray her as if she just reproduces fire like the guy from x-men.
You have done a great job executing her.
Love it and this is very inspiring for myself.

Thank you very much man.:highfive:I did as much research to make sure I did her according to the Maori culture, also my fathers notes from his years at night school with Maori studies. Some of the myths & legends he used to read us were so intense, but filled you with a sence of pride. One image I will be doing is when Maui beat the Sun into the ground, so that we could do more in the day. Instead of the sun (Te Ra')always being in a hurry, hensing why the Maori people believed the sun came up out of the earth each morning. Wicked legends Bro, & I believe people should know more about them. Not many people world wide knew much of the culture, until the release of the Maori excibition back in the 80's called,'Te Maori'. When it was 1st witnessed in New York, it took the world by storm. I remember my father crying when it happened & did'nt understand why at the time(probably too busy thinking on how to beat the top score in Space Invaders, lol), as I've matured with more reading etc for a better understanding of the Maori, I now see the reason. Respect & Pride, we are still here for the world to recognise, Finally for who we really were/are. Thanks again Bro, & a pleasure to meet you man:headbang:

Yeah I personally believe that if you are going to do something Maori or anything cultural you need to have done research first.
Yeah the myths and legends can get quite intense but that is because of pride I think.Maui and the sun is probly the most well known Maori legend, he is NZs answer to Hurcules in some ways. Yeah the world does need to learn more about the culture because honestly all the world knows is that Maoris have "pretty tattoo designs" (Ta Moko) and thats all, there is so much more. Te Maori was the best. I was born in 1991 but I remember in school we had a thing called Duffy Books and I ordered Te Maori, it was the only book that I have read from start to finish (to interested on unlocking the next level of Crash Bandicoot on PS1 haha)
Hard out bro pleasure is all mine and I look foward to seeing what you come up with for the background.

2 others I'm looking into is Maui's fight with Tiki Tuna (the giant eel he cuts up to form the islands of Aotearoa), & him outwitting Mahuika for the fingernails, hensing how man recieved fire (also an image of her as a hagged woman, she went old & ugly when angered:reading:

I'm the same, but that's if the image I'm working on is according to my layout & concept. The image on Tangaroa was'nt hard to draw(be posting him on Thursday)but getting it to make sense of his purpose. Even added a Maori design to it(symbols based on the sea with Maori designs), a simple blue & green design. Something signifficant to the sea anywhooo...:happybounce::plotting:

LOL, Indeed she is. When she is angry, she appears as a old ragged hag. So the legend goes anywhooo..:highfive:. My next concept of her will be where Maui tricks her into taking off all her fingernails:onfire:

Thank you very much Alex:hug:. According to Maori legend, that's where she produced fire:onfire:. The next concept of her will be the tale of her & Maui (like a Maori version of Hercules..), where Maui tricks her into taking off all her fingernails. Don't know how to lay it out yet. Just started on the God of the Sea:happybounce:

Thank you my dear:hug:. My main focus with these is to show people of the culture & history behind the Maori era, this is why I was not a big fan of a movie they made in New Zealand called,"Once Were Warriors". It portrayed the people as a bunch of worthless drunks, instead of the realistic discipline they lived by in their day:reading:. With these artworks, I'm trying to exspunge that common observation & show people what they really were. I don't know if you have ever seen their carvings with jade, wood & whalebone, the shere patients behind there art is astounding to look at:wow:
